With A Slew Of New Awards, Eminem Is Now The RIAA’s Second-Most Successful Singles Artist

Over the course of the last twenty years, Eminem has established himself as one of the biggest selling artists in both hip-hop and music at large.

As of today, the rapper born Marshall Mathers has officially crossed another sales milestone, with a slew of new RIAA awards giving him over 100 million certified units in sales and sales equivalent units derived from streams.

Inclusive of a sweeping set of digital single certifications issued earlier today, he now has 107.5 million certified units, surpassing the pop star likes of Taylor Swift and Katy Perry to become the second-most successful singles act in RIAA history. Mathers reached this career milestone with new certifications for fan favorites like “Kill You” and “Stan,” as well as fresh multi-platinum nods for previously awarded singles including “Without Me” and “The Real Slim Shady.”

Notably, most of the Eminem songs included in this latest crop of RIAA certifications have never before received a gold or platinum award. Indeed, a number of them were never officially released as singles. Yet listeners’ digital consumption in the form of streams and paid downloads have nonetheless qualified these tracks. This situation is indicative of a new normal in how organizations like the RIAA and Billboard have granted increased weighting to streaming to their methodologies in recent years.

Only one artist has more certified units to date than Mathers in the digital singles realm, and it just so happens to be someone who has previously and repeatedly collaborated with him. Rihanna tops the RIAA category with 121 million units, inclusive of Eminem’s now 12x multi-platinum “Love The Way You Lie.” Nonetheless, Mathers can still claim the title of rap’s top-selling singles artist, with Drake currently a distant second with 55 million units and Kanye West in third place with 51.5 to his credit.

Though none of its songs contributed to this particular tally, Mathers’ late 2017 album Revival debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, with 267,000 total units in first week sales and sales equivalents. It marked his eighth consecutive album to reach the top of the all-genre album charts. Chances are good that the next set of RIAA certifications for Eminem will include its singles “River” and “Walk On Water,” which feature Ed Sheeran and Beyoncé respectively.

According to the RIAA, Mathers’ best-selling single of all time remains “Love The Way You Lie,” followed by the 10x multi-platinum certified “Lose Yourself.”

Beginning with Coachella this spring, Mathers will appear as a headliner on a number of American music festivals, including Governors Ball in New York and Bonnaroo in Tennessee, before heading to Europe for select dates.
